A plethora of entertainment’s elite came together to honor female achievement and the 8 amazing ELLE Women in Hollywood covergirls at their annual event in Los Angeles. Many took this as an opportunity to finally address Hollywood’s dark side that has plagued women for decades. Reports of producer Harvey Weinstein’s alleged sexual misconduct over the years has opened the dialogue in a time where closed door issues are finally getting their light.

on stage tonight, but also I would like this opportunity to honor every woman who has suffered sexual harassment, every woman who has stood up to a powerful man and said that what he is doing is wrong, Women in Hollywood and beyond have had enough.”
It was so refreshing to hear their speeches where several of the honorees and presenters shared personal stories of dealing with sexual harassment and abuse in the entertainment industry, deciding there is more to be done.

Ava DuVernay also made a powerful speech when introducing honoree Tessa Thompson calling for the protection of women and the elevation and protection of different races, sexualities, and identities. “I bring up color in regards to Tessa because it is important,” DuVernay started. “Her identity in this industry isn’t only woman, it is one of color. This invites a particular gaze, a particular way of being seen, a particular way of seeing yourself in this industry.” Get more of Ava’s speech here!
